From Comprehension to Intervention: A Complete Course in Domestic Abuse Awareness

This course aims to equip delegates with the knowledge to recognise victims who do not fit common domestic abuse stereotypes, identify those most at risk in abusive relationships, and understand the dynamics of abuse, including coercive and controlling behaviour. Delegates will also learn the impact of a perpetrator’s tactics on victims and apply the AVAA model, as well as create effective safety plans.

Description

This training course is designed to provide professionals with an in-depth understanding of domestic abuse, from recognising coercive

control to implementing effective interventions. The training will also reference the impact domestic abuse can have on a victim survivors mental health

 

Combining theory with practical application, the course covers legal tools, identifying risk, safety planning, and survivor-led support approaches.

 

By integrating key skills such as motivational interviewing and multi- agency collaboration, delegates will leave equipped to confidently and sensitively support victim-survivors while promoting early identification and risk mitigation.

This course ensures that professionals can contribute to a coordinated and trauma-informed response to domestic abuse.

Learning objectives

By the end of this training delegates will be able to:

  • Understand what is domestic abuse and the different types of abuse.
  • Recognise survivor/victims who do not fit the stereotypes of domestic abuse
  • Recognise and identify coercive and controlling behaviours
  • Explain the impact a perpetrator’s tactics have on survivor/victims and their mental health.
  • Apply knowledge of legal tools to support victim-survivors effectively
  • Understand risk levels of domestic abuse situations.
  • Give examples of a trauma-informed approach
  • Recognize the importance of language and how to use it with victim/survivors.
  • Use the AVAA model to encourage survivor engagement
  • Develop and implement safety plans based on individual needs
  • Work collaboratively within a multi-agency framework to support victim-survivors

Course Timings

This course contains 1 Module and is 7 hours long

This includes a comfort break, a lunch break and space for questions and time for the delegates to evaluate and reflect after the delivery
